Julia Stefanovici

Julia Stefanovici is an artist and researcher based in Cologne, Germany. She studied Art History at the University of Tübingen before completing her degree in Media Arts at the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (KHM) in 2016. Since 2017, she has been a research associate in the Laboratory for Experimental Architecture, Art and Research (LEAR) under Prof. Dr. Michel Müller at the Faculty of Architecture, TH Köln. She is currently pursuing her doctorate at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach in cooperation with TH Köln. Her dissertation, Tanzkleider – Kleidertanz, examines the phenomenon of textile architectures in the form of dance garments on the stage of contemporary dance, tracing how body, dress, and space dissolve into one another as the moving fabric generates ephemeral, spatial structures. Alongside her research, she works as a freelance costume and set designer and artistic consultant in the field of art, contemporary dance and performance.

Her artistic practice moves across installation, performance, and spatial intervention, exploring the relationships between body, garment, and space. Her works include LOIE MACHINE (2011), a kinetic installation of silk garments animated by fans and motors, referencing the veil dancer Loïe Fuller; and RAUMKLEID (2010), a wearable spatial sculpture composed of 52 square meters of fabric, examining how clothing shapes social roles and spatial perception. Her work has been shown internationally at venues including the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (ZKM) Karlsruhe, Tanzhaus NRW Düsseldorf, Videonale Bonn, Schauspiel Köln, Lofft Leipzig, and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, as well as at festivals including Festival Temps d’Images and Katalyst Festival Cologne.
